Karatu AA comes from a eponymously named Karatu processing center (called “factories” in Kenya) in the Kiambu county of Kenya. Karatu factory processes coffee from the surrounding villages of Karatu, Gitwe, Kibiru and Kigaa and is associated with the farmer group know as the Gitwe Farmers Co-operative. This Co-op is comprised of some 700-800 small growers some of whom contributed their coffee to make up this lot from the Karatu factory.
We first starting serving coffee from this factory going way back to 2011 when we were still partnered with Counter Culture Coffee for our roasted coffee. Since that time we, of course, have started roasting coffee and have had this coffee pop up on our menu from time to time (as recently as 2023). We are delighted to have Karatu return to our menu this year.
This coffee comes with a AA designation which simply refers to the screen/bean size, AA being the largest. In the cup we are delighted to find some of our favorite hallmarks of a delicious kenyan coffee; crisp cherry like acidity, citrus, black currant and an almost savory quality akin to a deliciously sweet stewed tomato.
We hope you enjoy this first Kenyan coffee of the season as much as we do!
