We first began our relationship with the community that produces Matambo AA in 2016 shortly after we began sourcing and roasting our own coffee. Since that time this coffee continues to be one we and our customers consistently look forward to each year and regard as one of the best coffees we offer.
The story of this coffee began in 2008 when a group of five farmers from the Gigante region in Colombia began bringing their coffees to the purchasing station in nearby La Plata. The excellence of their coffee and the potential for the region to produce consistently delicious coffees lead to renown Colombian coffee exporter Caravela establishing a purchasing station directly in Gigante and developing the Matambo moniker for coffees from this producing community. Gigante lies in a unique micro climate on the western slope of the eastern most Cordillera (mountain range) in Colombia which provides excellent cloud cover, temperature, rainfall and altitude for perfect coffee growth and production. Gigante itself sits within the larger legendary producing region of Huila. Over the years we have seen various producers from Gigante contribute to Matambo. Each year the number and specific producers can vary but the consistency and quality is always exceptional. This years lot of Matambo AA is representing the work of 14 different producers from Gigante (one of the largest contributors this year is Alcides Avendaño Cortes pictured below). The typical coffee varieties grown by this group include Caturra, Colombia, Boubon and Pink Bourbon.
Matambo is a name befitting this coffee’s giant taste. To the Michués, an indigenous tribe in Colombia, Matambo was a giant who fell in love with their queen and to protect his right to be with her, fought off whole armies single-handedly. Eventually Matambo was defeated by a massive army, but his legend lives on.
